Tree and Shrub Pruning

Proper pruning enhances curb appeal, increases property values, and helps make sure your property is safe for your family or your business’s customers.

Tree King performs all services in accordance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A300 Tree Care Standards, which provide standard practices and specification writing guidelines for arborists, urban foresters, horticulturalists, landscape architects, and contractors.

Structural or corrective pruning

  • Creates sound, healthy trees
  • Eliminates weak branch attachments, the most common cause of tree failure and storm damage.
  • Performed on trees of all ages.
  • Develops a dominant central leader, especially important for young trees.
  • Reduce risks and potential failure as the tree grows and matures.

Additional services include:

Canopy thinning increases light penetration, improves air flow through the crown, and decreases the weight branches must support.

Canopy elevation removes the tree’s lowest branches to increase clearance for pedestrians, mowing, or to maintain vehicular sightliness.

Safety pruning specifically focuses on eliminating hazardous issues such as broken branches and weak branch attachments, overweighted branches, or diseased branches to minimize the risk of failure during storms and high wind events.

Dead wood removal is a practice that improves the appearance, safety and health of trees by minimizing opportunities for insect infestations and pathogen infections. Dead or dying branches or those affected by insect damage or disease are pruned back.

Clearance pruning removes branches to maintain safe clearance around buildings, power lines, signage, lighting and other structures, and to maintain sightlines for pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Storm damage clean-up and debris removal includes using proper pruning cuts on branches torn or damaged by storms, heavy ice, or high wind events, and clean-up of all tree debris on the site.

Vista pruning improves picturesque views and visibility of desirable scenes.

Seasonal shrub pruning, shearing or trimming reshapes hedges and plants to achieve your desired aesthetic and promote robust growth.

Cabling and bracing installation adds extra support for a tree with weak branch structure or weak branch attachments.

Tree Removal and Stump Grinding

When tree removal is necessary due to storm damage, disease, age or risk of failure, Tree King has state-of-the-art equipment to safely fell or dismantle a tree while minimizing the risk of damage to surrounding structures and trees.

  • Selective tree and shrub removal takes down damaged, diseased or dead trees or shrubs to mitigate the risk of branches or the entire tree falling and causing property damage or personal injury. Tree King’s arborists will devise a plan to safely fell the tree and remove all debris.
  • Crane-assisted tree removal utilizing a crane truck with an extended boom safely maneuvers large branches and tree trunks from tight spaces without damaging nearby plants or buildings. Instead of felling the tree, crews cut branches and the trunk into large sections that are hoisted by crane onto the truck to haul away.
  • Stump grinding removes the stump and surface roots to prepare the site for new plants or turf. Wood chips and debris can be removed upon request.

Inspection and Consulting Services

Call the Tree King arborists when you need an expert evaluation of the condition of your trees!

Tree King’s certified arborists have earned certification by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), which requires years of experience and extensive knowledge of tree biology, risk management, and protection; pruning; safe work practices; tree health diagnosis and treatment; soil management and more.

Our arborists routinely consult on:

  • Tree health inspection and diagnosis
  • Structural and safety evaluation
  • Disease and insect inspection and diagnosis
  • Tree audit and assessment

These signs indicate an urgent tree health or structural issue:

  • Cracks in the tree trunk
  • Broken or dead branches in the tree canopy
  • Asymmetrical growth or decline
  • Encroachment into power lines
  • Loose or missing bark
  • Leaf discoloration
  • Early leaf drop
  • Signs of insect infestation such as bagworms
  • Fuzzy or moldy substances on leaves, branches or trunks that indicate fungal infections or other diseases
  • Visible roots

Root Care and Protection

Optimal tree health depends upon vigorous roots and a supportive soil environment. Tree King’s wholistic tree care approach includes comprehensive root care and protective measures.

  • Girdling root removal prevents tree decline and death by pruning roots that are constricting the uptake of water and nutrients. Signs of distress that indicate girdling roots include poor trunk flare, isolated areas of branch dieback, or a trunk that is noticeably flatter on one side. Roots are then gently uncovered using an air spade, and girdling or overlapping roots are pruned.
  • Soil compaction treatment aerates the soil and incorporates organic material to increase the amount of oxygen and water available for tree roots to absorb.
  • Construction site root zone protection helps prevent soil compaction and root damage during nearby construction.
