What is "topping” and does it help or hurt trees?
Topping is the indiscriminate cutting back of tree branches to stubs or lateral branches that are not large enough to assume the terminal role. Topping is perhaps the most harmful tree pruning practice known according to the International Society of Arboriculture, as it leads to unacceptable risk, tree stress, decay, and destroys the natural form of the tree. Tree King will professionally prune your trees, but topping is a practice we avoid.
What is the best time of year to prune trees and shrubs?
It depends on several key factors, including 1) the tree or shrub species, 2) the type of pruning needed, and 3) whether there is an active disease infection or insect infestation. Plants need time and use a lot of energy to heal pruning wounds, so that also factors into the timing decision. Tree King’s pruning crews work year-round, and our arborists will help determine the optimal time to prune your trees and shrubs.
How often do trees need to be pruned?
Generally, every two to three years is sufficient. Young trees need more frequent pruning to ensure development of a proper central leader and that future structure problems are prevented. Over-pruning (removal of more than 25% of the tree’s foliage) can be stressful enough to cause the decline or death of the tree. Annual inspections, fertilization, and regular maintenance pruning every two or three years keep most trees in excellent health.
I just planted new trees. How soon should I prune them?
Any broken branches and dead wood should be pruned soon after planting, so the tree doesn’t waste energy trying to support marginal limbs. Then it’s best to give young trees two years to establish their root system before pruning. Trees need lots of nutrients and water to heal pruning wounds, so allowing time for the tree’s root system to develop after transplanting will lessen the stress on the tree.
My tree split during a severe storm. Can it be saved?
Probably not. Trees heal wounds by gradually “encapsulating” the pruned or broken branch. Trees cannot heal large wounds before decay sets in, and decay prevents healing. Plus, most trees that have sustained significant damage are structurally unsound and a safety risk.
Will sealing compounds or wound dressing be applied to my trees?
No, pruning wound dressings provide no benefit and many products actually slow the tree’s natural sealing process.
How much does it cost to remove a tree?
Many factors determine the cost of tree removal, including height and size of the tree, accessibility to the site, surrounding structures and power lines, adjacent trees and landscaping, and the equipment and crew members needed to safely perform the work. Tree King’s arborists will determine a customized plan to accomplish the tree removal and provide an estimate for your approval.
How do I know that someone is qualified to inspect and care for my trees?
The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is a tree industry association that promotes the professional practice of arboriculture with its ISA Certified Arborist program which is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board. The ISA Certified Arborist designation can be earned by individuals that are trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of arboriculture. Look for this credential when hiring a tree care professional to ensure the arborist is qualified, competent, safe, and adheres to the ISA Code of Ethics.
